Is he a player or did he really care (long but i NEED HELP!)?

definitely was long haha. ok, what it seems like to me is that he did care about you, and he might still. but, because he's a guy (and we're notoriously lacking confidence around girls) he's not sure how to express how he really feels. he's probably trying to get over you but is feeling something in him that's saying that he's making a mistake. if i were you, i would try to hang out with him more and see how it goes. let him know that you still like him and ask him what you did wrong or something like that. don't just let him slip through your fingers, be proactive, go after him, let him know he made a mistake. good luck :)
